Want to Print cheaper? I'll tell you how I saved over $400 a year!

I think most homeschoolers are looking for an affordable printing at home option.  I just can't see rushing to staples to make copies EVER!  I have a cheap epson injet printer currently.  This was a great option when I only printed occasionally because it had the cheapest ink out there!  (TIP #1 - when buying a printer look at the cost of ink/toner).  When we because homeschoolers I found I was going through ink about every 4 weeks.  At $40 a pop it was a big expense!  Then I found an amazing solution!!

A Laser Printer!!!  Sounds space age but all it means is that it uses toner instead of ink.  Now the model I bought was reasonably priced at $150 but it only prints black/white.  No color.  However I found that most of the time that is all I really need!  I was able to get at least 1600 sheets printed on the beginner toner the printer came with!  Now I'm expecting around 2600+ on this new toner.  That means I might have to buy new toner once every 8 months or so!!!!

Now before you rush out here are some things you should consider:

  • Do you want copy capabilities?
  • Do you need wireless
  • Duplex printing options (front/back)

I wanted ALL of those options and at $150 I think the Brother HL 2280DW is a great bargain!

Amazon sells it with free shipping if you have PRIME (something I think every homeschooler needs!!)  or you can do what I did and price match at Best Buy.

Now the toner is $42.99 with Amazon Prime and estimates 2600 sheets (for a high yield cartridge).  A lower yield (1200 sheets) is about $30.00 with Amazon Prime.

They do sell 'off' brands for a fraction of the cost but I haven't tried those yet.

I hope this post helps you - I found that this question seems to be asked all the time on the homeschooling boards so I thought I would share my experience.

  1. Thank you! This sounds wonderful. It seems like every time I turn around, we're out of ink! Looks like I'll be getting a laser printer.
