Day 5 - Essentials According to My Family!

I thought I would switch things up a little bit with Day 5 and ask the kids and hubs what they thought were essentials.  Some were pretty normal but a few surprised me.

Essentials according to my Hubby:  a teacher, curriculum, room/storage

Essentials according to my 13 yr old son:  Home, a teacher, curriculum, supplies, computer, field trip and food.

Essentials according to my 11 year old son:  pencils, curriculum and FUN!

Essentials according to my 3 year old son:  Legos and lego castles!

Curriculum made it on all of the list (minus the 3 year old).  I tend to agree.  Good curriculum that fits your teaching style and your kid's learning style is a total essential.  When we started this adventure I asked a lot of questions, read a lot of books and frequented many curriculum company's websites to find what I thought would work well.

Of course supplies are a necessary evil and I bought so many that first year I didn't have to buy any this second year!!

Food and Field Trips cracked me up.  You can tell at thirteen that the priority is social events and eating!  Can't say I blame him.

My favorite answer out of all of them is FUN!  At the end of the day the kids  might notremember who won what battle, or how many wives Henry the VIII had but they will remember the moments you had fun.  Such as making a volcano, hosting a Valentine's Day party with friends or going to the aquarium and feeding the stingrays.  I hope they look back on these special years and know that academics were important and so was a fun learning environment!

So I finish up with this question:  What is your homeschooling essential?

  1. I have to laugh about food. My seven year old needs a snack every single time we sit down for bookwork!
