We Choose Virtues Review

We Choose Virtues Review

Character training is something I really want to focus on as we homeschool.  I really didn't know much about it with my bigger boys but when I had my little guy I started realizing I needed a bigger focus on this area.

We Choose Virtues is all about training children and they realize it is hard work.  They've designed many products to help parents, teachers and churches to achieve this goal!

What we received:

Parenting Cards -which is 13 double sided cards that are made of a thick cardstock.  Each card includes one virtue and is 8.5' x 5.5'.  Available in KJV, NIrV and Spanish.  KJV has verses from the Old Testament and NIrV uses both Old and New Testament.

For this review I picked a virtue at the beginning of the week.  I had all three of my kids sit down on the couch (3, 11, 13) and I  would read over the virtue.  First I would read over the name of the virtue then the saying on the front of the card.  Then we would read aloud the bible verse.  The bigger kids had their bibles to read along with me.  Then I would flip the card and read the story on the back  - which is about the little kid on the front.  We would discuss what the story was about.  I had our whiteboard out and we would brainstorm ideas about the topic as well.  Lastly we would sing some scripture songs to go with the virtue.

    For Kindness we sang:

Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.  Ephesians 4:32

    For Obedient we sang:

Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.
Doing exactly as the Lord commands, doing it happily.
Action is the key, do it immediately, joy you will receive.
Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.
    O-B-E-D-I-E-N-C-E.
Obedience is the very best way to show that you believe.

For Gentle and Forgiving we sang:

Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.
Beloved, let us love one another - 1 John: 4:7-8

After we did that for the day I hung the virtue card up on the refrigerator.  As the week progressed we would talk about our virtue of the week and try to sweetly mention if one of us needed correction in that area.  We sang our songs a lot through out the week to so that the virtue was forethought in our mind.  I also offered Jace the opportunity to color the coloring pages - which sometimes he wanted to and other times not so much.  (He is hit/miss with coloring!)

I really liked these cards.  I think that character training is very important and the bright visual was a great way to introduce these traits to my little guy.  My big kids were very sweet to work together with us even though they were really too big for this kind of thing.  Another very important thing to me was having the King James Version available.  That is the version of the Bible we use and many products we've used didn't include that translation.  This meant we had to either translate with our own Bible or just skip all together on the product.  This was very important to me and I was so pleased with that option.

I only have a small complaint.  I wish that the cards were laminated.  They are very thick card stock  that is a very nice quality but I think laminating them would give them just a bit more durability.   I am personally going to laminate them myself but I would have loved if they came that way.  I would have also liked a nice little bag to hold them in.  They came in a clear ziploc-type bag which was fine but I would have liked something more like a plastic case.

I am planning on continuing using the cards we've gone through quite a few of them for this review but I plan on keeping a rotation and doing it year round.  Frankly, we all need a daily reminder in our character to keep in in check.  I think it will benefit us all and with my little guy only being three circling through many times will keep it fresh and re-affirm the traits.
