Q is for Questions #abcblogging

Q is for Questions!

There are questions I get asked all the time as a blogger and as a homeschooler.  I thought I would use this week's letter to go over some answers to those questions!  If you have a question please leave a comment and I will try to answer it as well!

Q:  Is homeschooling legal?
A:  Yes in USA it is 100% legal!!  (see the next question for additional information)

Q:  How do you start homeschooling?
A:  I start with knowledge.  First thing you should do is find out the homeschooling laws for your state.  Surprisingly each one is very different!  I suggest joining and getting information at HSLDA.

Q: Is homeschooling hard?
A: Yes and No.  It is hard work.  Anything you have to work at isn't easy but it is very rewarding and fun too.  It is my calling and I'm thrilled to do it even on the VERY HARD DAYS!

now to blogging:

Q:  How did you get started?
A:  Blogger.com lets you make a free blog and it is really easy to start.  I've had this blog since 2009 although it wasn't always active.

Q:  Any blogging recommendations for a newbie?
A:  Get your free site and buy your dot com site.  After that start posting material.  The more the merrier.  People don't want to follow a site that has no content.

Q:  How do you get stuff to review?
A:  I get asked this one all the time.  There are many places but the big thing is to have an active blog with regular content.  There are many review teams and I even have companies contact me directly with product.  If you would like to review things I suggest you do a few reviews of things you regularly use to see what format fits your style.

I hope this Q & A gave you some insight on the two subjects.

Our Blessing Bowl!

Do your children ever pick at each other? Do they find every fault possible? How about tattle tailing about the smallest things? Well if you answered yes to any of these questions I have an idea that just might help!

For the last few months I had noticed that my children would do exactly these things! I would find myself correcting them over and over. So much that I hated hearing myself talk!  If your a mom you know exactly what I mean.

So I prayed about it and thought about what I could do differently to stop the nonsense in my house.  God answered!! I came up with the idea of Our Blessing Bowl! The funny twist to this story is that I had come up with the idea but was taking my sweet time to implement it. Here's the twist..... One morning at the beginning of our school day I walked into the classroom and found my kids creating it!  They had each written their names on a small piece of paper, folded them, and put them in the bowl.  They were eager to begin this new activity!

Every morning we each pick a name from the Blessing Bowl and throughout the day it is our job to find a way to be a blessing to whoever we picked.  I don't let the kids tell who they have as I love the idea of the other one not expecting the blessing. ;)

This has been a huge blessing to this mama as I watch my 14, 12, 9, 7, and 4 year old find ways throughout the day to bless each other! Do they still have moments? Sure! But there's some sweetness thrown in there too!

As you will see in my picture our bowl isn't fancy as I still haven't taken the time to make it cute but it still serves it's purpose. You can make yours as cute as you want, as a matter of fact your little cuties might just enjoy doing it for you! ;)

I'll be praying that many blessings abound in your home as you move forward with guiding your little ones to The Lord!

Easy Crock-Pot Pinto Beans #abcblogging #recipes

I love using my crock-pot to cook.  It is so easy and most things come out so tender and juicy.  It is also a big time saver with the fix/forget aspect!

First things first is you will need a bag of dry pinto beans.  Then you have to soak the.  I used my crockpot and let them sit in it overnight.  (The bag of beans says you have sort and look for stones, I do this but I have yet to find a single stone ever.)

After you soak overnight give a really good rinse.

Then I put them in a pot on the stove and brought to a boil.

Another rinse then dump back into a clean dry crockpot.

Now onto the Ham-hock.  I found this in my grocery near the ham steaks and ham.  You might have to ask at your local store.  As you can see it was very cheap but it packs so much flavor so don't skimp on this part!

Put the Ham-hock in the middle of the beans and cover with water.

Cover and cook on low for 8 hours.

Remove the ham-hock and toss in the trash...
Use the beans for tacos or on top of rice .... I didn't keep the broth the beans are sitting in but next time I will and make bean soup by adding some additional ingredients.

Ingredients:
Bag of Dry Pinto Beans
Hamhock
water

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop: Day 5 - Essentials According To My Family #WIN

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop

Day 5 - Essentials According to My Family!

I thought I would switch things up a little bit with Day 5 and ask the kids and hubs what they thought were essentials.  Some were pretty normal but a few surprised me.

Essentials according to my Hubby:  a teacher, curriculum, room/storage

Essentials according to my 13 yr old son:  Home, a teacher, curriculum, supplies, computer, field trip and food.

Essentials according to my 11 year old son:  pencils, curriculum and FUN!

Essentials according to my 3 year old son:  Legos and lego castles!

Curriculum made it on all of the list (minus the 3 year old).  I tend to agree.  Good curriculum that fits your teaching style and your kid's learning style is a total essential.  When we started this adventure I asked a lot of questions, read a lot of books and frequented many curriculum company's websites to find what I thought would work well.

Of course supplies are a necessary evil and I bought so many that first year I didn't have to buy any this second year!!

Food and Field Trips cracked me up.  You can tell at thirteen that the priority is social events and eating!  Can't say I blame him.

My favorite answer out of all of them is FUN!  At the end of the day the kids  might notremember who won what battle, or how many wives Henry the VIII had but they will remember the moments you had fun.  Such as making a volcano, hosting a Valentine's Day party with friends or going to the aquarium and feeding the stingrays.  I hope they look back on these special years and know that academics were important and so was a fun learning environment!

So I finish up with this question:  What is your homeschooling essential?

Thank you for joining me on Day 5of 5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials.

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop: Day 4 ~ Support! #WIN

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop

Day 4 - Support

If you don't have a good support system in place it is really hard to be successful.  Think about Olympic Athletes, they typically have family and a coach to help they achieve their dreams.  (It also takes hard work - but that is for another post!)

For most homeschooling Moms the best support comes from your husband.  If he isn't on board it will be hard to have success.  Remember as Christian wives we  need to follow biblical submission (meaning Hubs is the head of the household.)  So we need to have our spouses go ahead to start homeschooling.

But it is more than that.  You might have his permission but if he isn't really in favor for it ~ perhaps has the attitude "we will try for a year"  then that isn't good support either.  It is so important to take the time to pray and have each of you feel the call of God to homeschool and be on the same page.

With Dad's support - you will have him excited to see what the kids accomplished each day.  He will listen as you debate curriculum and try to give some insight.  He will know that the money that you spend for homeschooling is an investment.  During your hardest days he will encourage you to press forward and tell you that you can do it!

After your spouse you will need some friends who homeschool to form a support system.  I am so lucky to have a few homeschooling friends who live locally.  It is an incredible blessing.  They are there to support, socialize and even lend a few things here and there!  We pray for one another and each family's homeschool.

You might be saying ... I have the spouse but NO-ONE local to me homeschools!  What can I do!  Well, I actually have a big online support group in several areas.  First is a little homeschool facebook group I helped start up with people I know that live all over the country.  It is a place we can privately ask for prayer, ask questions, praise our kids, and share our days.  It is a small group but very helpful.

I also belong to several larger groups on facebook.  There is one for Mystery of History users, one for apologia users,  and even one for Homeschool discussions.  So there is support out there you just have to find the right place.  Check online, check your library, look for a local co-op...  my own experience has led me to believe that us homeschoolers love to talk about homeschooling!  So reach out!

So what do you think?  Is support an essential?

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop: Day 3 - Time #WIN

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop

Day 3 - Time

Time is so simple but it will really impact your homeschooling days if you don't have it!

When I started homeschooling last year I had no idea how much time my kid's school (their private school they attended)  took up each day.  Between getting everyone up, fed, dressed, in the car... that alone was 1 1/2 hours (of course we would do those things normally except maybe shoes and car).  However the drive was 12 minutes so almost 30mins  to/and home 2xs a day - then some days they wouldn't come out in time so I'd wait up to an hour for that...  on top of that washing uniforms and homework... it all took a lot of time!

Now onto homeschooling.  You really need to have the time.  Your kids are not going to 'fit' it in their day.  It is their whole day.  Our ideal day starts with wake-up at 8:30 and school started by 9.  Of course we are flexible.  My middle son often gets up at 6:30 and has a bulk of his school done while the house is quiet.

The kids need realistic time to complete all their scheduled courses each day.  If starting at 8 was required we would start at 8 to get it done.

As a homeschooling Mom I need time to grade, plan and teach ON TOP of all the other things a normal stay-at-home mom does.  (Laundry, errands, bill paying, my own bible reading, cleaning...you get the idea).  Honestly what had to give was my social time.  I don't have as much time for things like lunches with friends, running to the store just because, creating elaborate meals, talking on the phone, facebook...   all of my time is measured against what needs to be done in the house with school and household jobs.

So you can see TIME is important! I can't tell you how many times people have thought I would have the extra time to do some errand for them, visit them or other things.  It just doesn't happen during the school year.  We had to make our HOMESCHOOLING TIME the priority!

I hope this post was a blessing to you.  Please leave a comment below telling me if TIME is an essential in your homeschooling day!

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop: Day 2 ~ Money! #WIN

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop

Day 1 - Money

Yes.  I said money.  I really believe this too.  There is a cost to homeschooling.  Why money?  Well, you will need books, things to hold the books, pens, paper, computers, printers... basically STUFF.  While each thing listed above is not essential you will need SOMETHING.  I can't begin to tell you what might appeal to you.  Maybe your the type that likes to print out free curriculum online...well you'll need a computer, internet, paper and a good printer (I actually use two different printers!)

Perhaps your family will want a curriculum that is all laid out for you (boxed) - guess what those are pricey!

Maybe you want to join a co-op - there's a fee.

Homeschool conference - registration fee.

Piano lessons, football, ice skating ..... all have some cost.

Can you cut cost and trim the fat?  YES, but it is much easier to have a bit of money to get what you need.

For us with my husband being out of work those 21 months we had to eat away at our savings so we rely on our income tax refund to fund the school year.  Ideally though I would like to set aside a certain amount towards the cost.  This way if our computer breaks, it is there.  If we run out of printer ink/toner (which is crazy expensive) no problem.  If I see the most amazing gotta have it curriculum at the homeschool conference - no big deal!

So what do you think?  Is money an essential?

Thank you for joining me on Day 2 of 5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials.  I hope you will visit the other blogs participating this week.  I'll be back tomorrow morning to discuss another essential!

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop: Day 1 - God's Will #WIN

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials

5 Days of Homeschooling Essentials Blog Hop

Day 1 - God's Will

I thought a lot about what I found to be essential when starting on the homeschooling journey.  We've only been at a little over a year but there were several things that really stood out to me.  The first would be God's will.
I honestly feel if you are not called to do this you will not be successful.  God's Will for our lives is so important and we need to heed the call when it is given.

When my husband and I first started thinking about homeschooling it wasn't because we had thought about it all the years.  Both of my kids were in a private Christian school and doing well academically.  The problem was mainly finances.  My husband was laid off of work and we new would could not cover the tuition bill.  When I sat down and did the math I realized I could homeschool for about the cost of 2 months of tuition.  That is really a big difference.  So we began to pray - if my husband went back to work by said date then we knew God didn't have us to homeschool.  The date came and passed and still no job.  In fact a year later he was still out of work!  If we hadn't obeyed we would have been struggling with that over our heads all year!

So why is it essential?  I believe when you are in God's will for your life you will be in the best place for you!  It was not only my life to consider but my spouse and three children.
God gave me these verses about a year into homeschooling and I think they fit our situation:

 Deuteronomy 6:5-7 - KJV

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be in thine heart:

7 And thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sittest in thine house, and when thou walkest by the way, and when thou liest down, and when thou risest up.

I hope you have taken the time to pray about homeschooling and God's will for it in your life.  He may not have it for you but if he doesn't he will make that path smooth as well.
