Kora Naturals Emu Oil and Lanolin Lip Balm #REVIEW

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.*Additional disclaimers at the bottom of the post*

I have a really unique crew review to share with you today.  It is for  skin care products, which you know is one of my favorite things on earth!  I just love make up and skin care!   Kora Naturals sent me to amazing products to share with you.  I'm excited to share my thoughts and how I used them.

Koru Naturals ReviewWhat I received:

Emu Oil

and

Pure Lanolin Lip Balms

What they are and how  I used them:

I'm going to start with the Emu Oil. It comes in a little amber bottle with push up top.   Prior to this review I had never heard of Emu Oil so I was very intrigued.  The 'oil' itself is milky white and feels more like a serum than a true oil.  I would say it does have a bit of a oily slip as you rub in but then drys to more of a lotion type feel on the skin or dry oil.

I used the product in three ways.  First I did a deep treatment on my hair.  Applying it before washing and leaving it sit for about 10 minutes.  Then washing as usual.  It left my hair soft and with a nice restored feeling.  (Dry winter heat plays havoc on my hair this time of year.)  I also used this as a style product/leave in conditioner by applying a few drops to towel dried hair and styling as usually.  My hair looked nice but I didn't really notice any benefit to this method like I did with the deep treatment.

Koru Naturals Review
Next I started doing a little research.  Apparently Emu Oil is great for aches and pains.  I've had this weird crick in my neck since I had my youngest who is now 4!  I thought ~ why not try it, what could it hurt?  So I applied a few drops to my neck and I have to say it really helped!  I felt like my neck was less stiff overall.  This was my favorite use of the product and one I continue to do daily.  It only takes a few drops on my neck (or other achy areas) and I feel relief.  **Of course I am no medical doctor, I'm just sharing how I used it and the benefit I saw personally.**

Next let me tell you about the Lip Balms.  I SUFFER from chapped lips.  I tend to pick at them when I'm bored or nervous so I always have chapped lips going on.  This is a pain because I love wearing matte lipsticks and you need perfect, smooth lips to pull that type of product off.  I had a variety of lip products bedside to treat the problem overnight but nothing was really cutting it until I tried the lip balms.

This product came in a little white tube.  It is unscented and a very thick product.  Once applied you will feel it there but Ooooh how soothing it feels.  I noticed a difference immediately.  I apply at night and in the morning my lips feel new.  Smooth and healthy.  I've even been using it on my 4 year old because his lips chap and crack and it has helped him too.  I would say this is a treatment type product.  You don't need horrible lips but because of the thickness you might not want to use this one like a regular chapped lip stick.  I could see this as being AMAZING for days you are going to be out in the wintery cold weather.  It would offer awesome protection.
Koru Naturals Review

So to sum it up I loved both of these products.  My only complaint was the closure on the Emu Oil.  It had a circle type plastic piece with a hole in it on the bottle, then on the screw top, there was push/flip cap.  I found that this caused a bit of leakage after the initial use.  Not sure how they can perfect that system but it was a bit messy at times.

In Freedom's Cause #review

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links. *Additional disclosure at the end of the post*

I am a strong believer in read alouds.  I love how your brain paints the picture of the words on the pages. The only problem is I'm always the one doing the reading, so it is not that relaxing for me.  Having someone else do that work for me is just wonderful.   Heirloom Audio Productions has produced another amazing audio experience for our ears!

What I received:

In Freedom's Cause Single Package

which included:
In Freedom's Cause (CD Set - Physical Copy)
In Freedom's Cause Study Guide (Digital Download)
In Freedom's Cause Soundtrack (MP3 download)
Printable copy of The Prayer Of William Wallace. (Digital Download)

How we used it:

Actually this one was quite interesting.  It seems we don't have as many CD players as I thought in my house anymore.  We first tried it on the PS4, then the Xbox - neither worked.  I knew I had two computers with cd-roms and my DVD player but we wanted to sit in the living room on the couches - to be comfy.  So my bright boy brought out the old karaoke machine  and guess what - it worked!!  So we gathered around the karaoke machine, which ended up being an awesome cd player (great speakers on that little thing!)  The bigger boys (12, 14) were the ones to listen with me.  My little guy played with legos on the floor but at 4, he really didn't know what was going on.

Let me tell you a bit about this CD set!  This isn't your typical straight - flat audio book.  This is a full production.  There is a narrator that tells the tale but each character is played by a different actor/actress.  There are sound effects galore which really make you feel like your in the story.  It really is an amazing little gem because it is more like an experience than just a audio book.

In Freedom's Cause is the story of Scotland in the time of William Wallace and Robert the Bruce.  I've always found this to be fascinating.  We meet Ned and Gerald (you might remember them from Under Drake's Flag) again.  As they learn about this story, we share the experience with them.  We studied William Wallace a few months ago  in history so this was pretty awesome to go along with that lesson.  My bigger boys remember what had happened and were able to tell me a bit of Robert the Bruce's story.

Their is also a awesome study guide that comes with and goes along with the chapters.  It contains comprehension questions and vocabulary words.  By using this along with the audio you can make a whole unit study.

Our thoughts:

We really loved this review.  It was a nice change from our regular read-alouds. I loved how many of the characters believed in God and had extraordinary moral character.  This is something we instill in our children and Iloved hearing it in this production.

All the action was perfect for my bigger kids, they were thoroughly engrossed while listening.  Even though the story of Scotland fighting for her freedom can be a sad one at times, G.A. Henty really tells a great tale and Heirloom Audio Productions brings it to life in the most wonderful way.  It is an important lesson for all of us to remember that freedom doesn't come free.  It is a worthy battle to fight - for freedom.

IndoctriNation DVD #REVIEW

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links. Additional disclosure at the end of the post.

I am so excited about my first Crew Review to A Rup Life for 2015.  This is an exciting product and a great way to kick off another fantastic year! I was sent  IndoctriNation  on DVD by  Great Commission Films .

About the film:

This film is about the role of Christians in the public school with a focus on the decline of Christianity and the role public schools played in that.   It provides a history of public education and shows the shifts in thinking along the way.  This movie will have you rethinking the statement - "not my school".  Colin Gunn a homeschooling dad, takes you on a road trip as he gets to the heart of the question - Should Christians still cling to the public school system or is it time for a mass exodus?

Trailer:

My Thoughts:

I watched this DVD with my husband. This one is for Mom and Dad - so skip the young kiddos.  (High School students might be okay with the content so use your own discretion - although frankly what they talk about is being taught in public schools today.  We just use discretion with how those topics are approached in our home.)

We have never sent our kids to public school because frankly, the ones in our area are not so good.  We've paid for private Christian school and currently we homeschool. I say that to say that this movie wasn't going to sway me away from thinking public schools are wonderful.  I've already felt that they were not the best place for Christians.  We've had friends say that their kid will be the light shining in the darkness ... you know like the song... this little light of mine.  Well, I think that Colin Gunn sums up what I've always thought.  The system is designed to extinguish those lights by a steady anti-christian doctrine taught from day one by a place we 'trust'.

There were many experts interviewed during the course of this documentary.  We meet school teachers, theologians, Pastors, parents and more.  Each shared a bit of the history of public education, how it affected their families' personally and have it affects society.  It was amazing how the timeline showed the clear path of thinking from the 1800s!  A way of thinking that was designed to destroy the home and essentially take control of the mind of the child.  I felt sick watching it because honestly I had NO CLUE!  I really didn't know the history of public education (even though I'm a product of it)  and once seeing it in chronological order it disgusted me!

I think the hardest and most telling story was from Brian Rohrbough, parent and father of a Columbine victim.  He shares the story of his son Dan, and how the event played out.  It is chilling.  I'm so thankful that he shares the story because the words he spoke really hit home.  He essentially says, " It is my fault - I sent him there."  It was just heartbreaking to see him carry that heavy load of blame - he didn't pull the trigger, but as a Christian parent he feels responsible because we should all do better for our kids. (I can see why he feels that way - and I pray for his heart to heal.)

I feel like this movie is essential for Christian parents who think there is no harm in the public school.  When you see the evidence place before you it is hard to swallow but with knowledge comes power and responsibility.   It is time to reclaim our youth and our family!

Weekly Recap

What a week!  It is freezing in NJ.  Like negative digits.  We don't typically have weather like that but it is sure wreaking havoc on my desire to leave the house.  Bitterly cold winds too!  Ugh!  I am looking forward to Spring!

We are trucking along with school here.  Loving Mystery of History Volume III.  By far my favorite book so far.  My oldest started doing a Greek Morphemes course and boy is that fun.  I love word origins.   He does too!  The middle boy is doing a homeschool spelling be today - wish him luck!  He has been studying for a month!  Lastly, is the little guy.  He is plowing through his school work as well.  Doing a weeks worth of worksheets in one day.  I think he is ready to move forward.  It is a weird thing to have a child born in November.  It makes learning interesting because he won't be school aged until after the cut off but he sure is wanting more meat for school.  I keep giving him more.  He is a boy, his desire for work will most likely change when he is a bit older.

2.  I am loving that cast iron skillet I talked about the other day.  I cooked bacon in it - BACON.  YUM.  It works great.  Cleaning kinda stinks though.

3.  I still have the nativity up on my shelf from Christmas.  Not sure it won't be there by next Christmas...

4.  I ate leftovers for breakfast.

5.  The pizza place knows me by my voice... yeah we order way too much.

Cast Iron Cooking - My New Obsession

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

I have a bad habit of wanting to try everything and do everything.  I have craft supplies like you've never seen and of course I've already shared my new oil obsession.  So what is next?  Cast Iron cooking.

Where did this new obsession start? Well, honestly I've always been intrigued.  I've seen famous chefs on the cooking channel making amazing dishes in their cast iron skillets.  However there were some practical problems with jumping into this new style of cookware.

  • The pans are heavy

  • The pans are pricey

  • There is work involved with seasoning

  • You can't wash the pans

See that list?  Those are all great reasons to skip trying this new or rather old fad.  Then something happened.  I went through another set of non-stick cookware.  That is the 4th set in 15 years.  I'm tired of flaky non-stick stuff coming off my pans.  I've read articles that say how toxic those pans are and I'm tired of replacing them.  So one day I was scrolling through facebook and a picture of this skillet set popped up on my feed.  I thought - WHY NOT!  So I took the plunge.

This is the set I bought.

Amazon shipped the pans in two days and they honestly sat in the box for another week.  I had to get some knowledge, there is some prep to cooking with these things!

So after scouring the blogsphere I found each site said about the same thing.

  • You have to season your pan - even if it is pre-seasoned.  I did this by cranking up the heat in my oven to 400 degrees and putting a little crisco shortening on the pan.  I cooked it for about 10 minutes that way.  Then I wiped the residue out and it was prepared enough.  Seasoning truly is a process that never ends.  Building layer upon layer on the pan.  Until the pan has a sheen of seasoning and is almost non-stick.

  • You can wash your pan but it is better not to.  See you thought I would say don't ever touch the pan with soap!  Well, from my vast reading I can tell you that it is okay but your going to have season afterwards.  It is also best to wait until you have seasoned it a bit and built up some layers too.

  • Water is a problem.  Yes you have to rinse/wash the pans after every use.  Being sure to scrape them of food.  The big thing you have to consider is that you can not put that pan on the rack to dry.  You have to dry it and be sure it is dry.  What I did was wash the pan then dry with a paper towel.  Then I put it in the oven for about 10 minutes to be sure there was no moisture left behind.  Worked perfectly.  What happens if you don't do this?  The pan can rust and you'll have to work at getting it off (it is possible!).

So what did I cook? I've only made one dish so far and it was a fried onion!  I put some olive oil on the bottom of the pan and slowly cooked the onions, moving them around occasionally.  In my mind I thought they would burn or stick to the pan but they didn't.  Instead they browned beautifully!  Some of the best caramelized onions I've ever made!

Overall, I'm so glad I took the plunge.  I can see this pan lasting forever and becoming a favorite cooking tool in my kitchen.

Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Say Nothing at All #REVIEW

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

Anyone who knows me knows I have the gift of gab.  I can fill awkward silence like no other.  I make friends everywhere I go because I'm not afraid to strike up conversation.  On the flip side, I've shared things I probably shouldn't have and definitely said things that people took as rude or inappropriate.   It is a fine line I walk - daily.

I was thrilled to review  Keep It Shut: What to Say, How to Say It, and When to Say Nothing at All by Karen Ehman.  This book is funny and practical.

About the book:

Keep It Shut by Karen Ehman explores how to better control your tongue, knowing what to say and how to say it, and realizing when it is best to say nothing at all.

Chapters:
  1. From Sparks to Raging Fire
  2. Squabbles, Spats, And Such
  3. Stop Filling the Gap
  4. Zip it and Pray
  5. Motives and Manners
  6. Behind the Screen
  7. But I'm Just Sharing a Prayer Request
  8. Lying, Loving and People Pleasing
  9. Hurling Hate or Healing Hearts
  10. Something To Talk About
  11. Gotta Have The Last Word

My Thoughts:

This was a very convicting book for me.  I have a mouth problem - I always have.  As I made my way through my 30s God got a hold of my heart and really convicted me on how I use my words.  I feel like this book really covered a bunch of good points on keeping our mouths pleasing to The Lord! The bible says:

Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength, and my redeemer. - Psalm 19:14

Ehman's style of writing is wonderful.  She is engaging and funny all while keeping it real about our heart problem.  She uses scripture to back up all that she says which I really appreciated.  I loved how she shared her heart when it came to each chapter - she is a fellow gabber - so she has walked this with us!  She is that honest, yet God-loving friend telling you how it is and how to work on it!

Remember the Lilies #Review & Kindle Giveaway

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

I'm delighted to share with you a new book,  Remember the Lilies by Liz Tolsma.  This story is a love story about Rand and Irene.  Both being held as war captives - they have difficult lives.  However both have strong values and morals that lead their daily lives.  A series of fateful events have them crossing paths and ultimately spending quite a bit of time together.  During that time they grow from friendship to love.

The question is can they forgive past events, move forward and make it out of captivity alive?  I felt like this story was powerful.  Tolsma wrote realistic characters for the survival conditions they were facing.  She gave them lives in spite of the hardship they endured.  I loved the bit of WWII history that was woven into the tale.  I loved the way salvation was incorporated into the story as Rand comes to know Jesus.  I also love how forgiveness was an essential theme.  This was a great read and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

You can purchase your copy of Remember the Lilies at your local book retailer or online at stores like Amazon.

 About the book:

Interred by the Japanese, missionary Irene Reynolds comes across a mysterious note while working at the censor's office. She memorizes the parts she must black out and delivers it to wealthy nightclub owner Rand Sterling. Before she knows what's happening, she's drawn into a web of secrets and danger.

Rand Sterling wants nothing more than to reopen his nightclubs once the war ends. But slimy Frank Covey wants his hand in the till---and has news that could threaten Rand's reputation if it became public. More importantly, beautiful and intriguing Irene Reynolds cannot discover this information if he expects to persuade her to become his wife.
When Irene is attacked by a sinister Japanese guard and their secrets are exposed, they must learn the true meaning of forgiveness---if they can stave off starvation until the American troops bring freedom.

Additional Information:

Return to Exile by Lynne Gentry #BookReview

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

I just love how a book can transport you to another place and time.  That is just what Return to Exile by Lynne Gentry's book does!  In this book we meet Dr. Lisbeth and we take an amazing journey with her back to third-century Rome.

About:
Six years ago, impossible circumstances forced Dr. Lisbeth Hastings to leave behind the love of her life, not just in another country, but in another time. Her work as a top-notch epidemiologist and parenting her little girl helps alleviate the pain, but at night when her exhausted head hits the pillow, images of her beloved Cyprian haunt her sleep.

Cyprian Thascius returns from political exile a broken man. He's lost his faith, the love of his life, and his purpose. He attempts to move on, to face the danger that is looming over Carthage, but when Cyprian's true love suddenly reappears, his heart becomes as imperiled as the fledgling church he seeks to save.

Have the years that kept Lisbeth and Cyprian apart created too wide a chasm to bridge? In the midst of a new epidemic and rising oppression, will their love be the most costly fatality? Filled with gripping action and raw emotion, this spell-binding adventure of star-crossed lovers captivates with every turn of the page in this electric continuation of The Carthage Chronicles.

You can purchase your copy of Return to Exile at your local book retailer or online at stores like Amazon

My Thoughts:

I love time travel books.  I think that is my favorite theme for time period novels.  This book was so unique because it brings us back to the early church and the persecution that it was facing.  Interestingly enough part of the storyline revolves around measles - which has become a current topic in our news.  It was interesting to read the point of views of the vaccination mixed in with the story and how it related to the past.

While this was the second book in The Carthage Chronicles, I had no problem picking it up and diving into the story.  You can totally read this one alone.  Times were different in the past and Gentry really weaves a tale that allows your heart to feel for the people and the trials they faced.  I found myself sad when bad things happened to the characters - which is a testimony to how well we get to know them during the book. You really will feel like you've stepped into the past in Return to Exile.

Tips for Jumping on the Essential Oil Bandwagon #OILYADVENTURE

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

You honestly can't go on facebook anymore without seeing something for essential oils.  If you mention an ailment in a status you are guaranteed to have a 'I have an oil for that' response in the thread.   Why are they all the rage all of a sudden?  Is it something you should consider?

My theory on why it is all the rage is because there is two big MLM (multi-level marketing) companies saturating social media for recruiting purposes.  (You know they need a fresh market to grow their downline.)  With social media sites like pinterest - there is tons of information out there on Essential Oils.

So how do you know if it is safe or right for you?

 TIP 1

First off I recommend getting a good book on Essential Oils. A book independently written away from any company.  My hubby bought me:  The Complete Aromatherapy and Essential Oils Handbook for Everyday Wellness by Nerys Purchon & Lora Cantele for Christmas.

This book has a great wealth of information on all the different oils and suggested use.  I have found it to be a valuable resource.

TIP 2

Always dilute!  The best way to try a new oil is to mix with a little carrier oil.  I love to use coconut oil because we always have it on hand.  Use a dilution chart to make sure you do it properly.

TIP 3

Start small.  My first three oils were lavender, peppermint and lemon.  (peppermint is not recommended for use around small children.) I didn't invest a ton of money to try this out and I don't recommend you doing it either.  Lavender is pretty simple and has a ton of uses.

TIP 4

Research oils safe for kids.  This is vitally important.  Many oils are not recommended for children and almost none are recommended for under 2!  All of my kiddos are 4+ so I've been loving Plant Therapy's KidSafe line.  They have many blends that make it easy to purchase something for a specific need.

TIP 5

Learn about diffusing.  This is one of the most effective and easiest ways to get essential oils in the air and working for you.  Just a few drops in the diffuser is all you need.  This is my favorite way to use EOs.  Especially Lemon - it smells wonderful!

Please remember to use caution when experimenting with Essential Oils. This post is in no way medical advice.

I have another great DVD to share with you!   The Tom and Jerry Show Season 1 Part 2: Funny Side Up - which released in January - is a fun filled collection of mouse verse cat antics! My big kids love watching these guys on screen.

About:

The timeless adventures of Tom and Jerry are back in a brand-new TV show the whole family can enjoy! The Tom and Jerry Show Season 1 Part 2: Funny Side Up features 13 exciting escapades featuring Tom and Jerry and their favorite pals, including Spike and Tuffy.  The pursuit takes off as Tom, Jerry and the gang fly through unfriendly skies in Just Plane Nuts. Detectives Tom and Jerry are on the case to find Spike’s missing dog bones in Bone Dry. Love is in the air when a mad scientist transports Tom and Jerry to Paris to meet a girl cat and a girl mouse in Molecular Break Up. Jerry and Tuffy cause havoc on a luxury cruise liner in Cruisin’ for a Bruisin’. These and several other hilarious episodes are featured in this entertaining set.

“With cutting-edge animation and innovative story-telling, The Tom and Jerry Show, has brought a classic cartoon to a brand-new generation of viewers,” said Mary Ellen Thomas, Vice President Family & Animation Marketing. She added, “The Tom and Jerry Show Season 1 Part 2: Funny Side Up will delight viewers of all ages. We’re delighted to bring another entertaining Tom and Jerry release to consumers.”

Originally created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, Tom and Jerry emerged during Hollywood’s golden age of animation and became one of the most popular cartoon series in existence. The shorts focus on the never-ending rivalry between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse. The plots of each short usually center on Tom’s attempts to capture Jerry. Jerry however, is clever and quick on his feet so Tom hardly ever manages to catch him.

Roadmap Genesis DVD Review #RGCHALLENGE #WIN

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links. *Additional disclosure at the end of the post*

I am really starting to like documentaries.  I like that people tend to take an idea and explore it with public and expert opinions.  Recently, I watched Roadmap Genesis which is a movie that looks at the book of Genesis from the bible.  In this movie filmaker Nolan Lebovitz questions himself and us the viewer about the relevance of the book of Genesis in today's living.

About:

Roadmap Genesis is a film documentary that makes the case that the Book of Genesis is a roadmap containing guideposts on how to live a productive, fruitful, and fulfilling life that will help our society lift itself out of its current decline and return it to prosperity, promise, and accomplishment.

When Filmmaker Nolan Lebovitz found himself at a crossroads in his life, he knew he had to choose between continuing to make the Hollywood suspense thrillers that were his livelihood and trying to make the world a better place for his new young family. After much struggle, he found his answer in the Book of Genesis.

He decided to combine his love of the Book of Genesis with his passion for filmmaking and set out to travel the United States, interviewing clergy and public figures in order to build an undeniable argument about the continued importance of the Book of Genesis as guiding force in our Judeo-Christian country.

Roadmap Genesis invites Americans of all faiths to engage in a dialogue about the relevance of the Bible in the modern age. Through interviews ranging from Gov. Mike Huckabee of Fox News Channel to Rabbi David Wolpe, from Alan Dershowitz to the Archbishop of Chicago Cardinal Francis George, from Erick Stakelbeck of the Christian Broadcasting Network to Ken Ham of Answers in Genesis and the Creation Museum, and many, many more, Nolan explores the rules that God has set forth to help us maintain a successful and working society.
Connect with Roadmap Genesis at the following social media sites:  FACEBOOK and TWITTER.  You can watch the trailer for this movie here.

My Thoughts:

I found this film very interesting.  Leibovitz asks some tough questions: What is Genesis, Is it relevant for today's life and how does it impact how you live?  I find it sad both on screen and what I believe to be the majority of America - that most people when asked what is Genesis? - didn't know.  It shows how far as a nation we have strayed from our original foundations.

This movie looks at the beginning of Genesis as well as several other famous stories from the book.  It talks about how in Genesis 1:1 it says:

In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

which basically answers the question of what was here before us.  It covers how Adam came about and how we became a many language world.  It discusses the environment and how the bible calls us to care for our land. It challenges the viewer to have compassion on fellow man and work to change our world for the better.  Genesis has so many basic instructions for every day living.

I enjoyed watching this film.  I felt that the speakers chosen as 'experts' were fairly balanced.  It was an interesting take coming from a man of Jewish faith talking about the relevance of the bible today.  I really enjoyed seeing Mike Huckabee on screen.  I felt like his values came across and were closely aligned with mine.

All in all this was an interesting look at the book of Genesis and how it needs a revival in our society.  How more people need to take the time to read and learn about the rich heritage we have.

Books for Talking about the Birds and the Bees! #birdsandbees

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

The birds and the bees is one of the most difficult subjects to approach with kids. It is recommended that you have the talk earlier rather than later because kids are exposed to so many things nowadays.  I guess the thinking is better from you than somebody else.  I agree with this mentality.

In my search to find books on the subject I came across several that really helped with frame how, when and what I would say to my children.   Of course I'm a reader so I always start with books when researching.

For the Parents:

Guardians of Purity by Julie Hiramine.  I did a full review of this book here.  I think this is an important read for parents - it in fact changed the timing of when I told my boys about all of this.  I was going to wait but after reading this book I decided that at 11 & 13 it was the right age to approach the subject.

For younger kids and older kids:

The Wonderful Way Babies Are Made by Larry Christenson.  This book give the read deal details but in a gentle way.  There are two levels you can read to your child.  At 11 & 13 I read both to my kids because I felt they could handle the full story at that point.  Had I started this book (or had curious kids) at 7/8 I think the younger version would be perfect.

The Princess and the Kiss: A Story of God's Gift of Purity by Jennie Bishop.  This is a cute story of a princess that saves her kiss - knowing it is a precious gift for her future husband.

The Squire and the Scroll by Jennie Bishop.  This is sort of a go along book with the Princess one - but it talks about impurity.  Keeping yourself pure.

I read both of these books  (Princess/Squire) to my boys.  They had beautiful illustrations and were great conversation starters.

Just for the Boys:

Lintball Leo's not-so-stupid Questions about your Body by Dr. Walt Larimore.  This was a book both of my boys devoured in about 2 hours.  It talks about the changes going on in a boy's body as he reaches puberty.  The illustrations and silly humor make this an easy but informative read.

*I do not have girls so I can't recommend a book on girl's for puberty at this time.  I just don't feel comfortable recommending anything I haven't personally read.  When I was looking for books on this subject I was at a homeschool conference and the ladies at the GenerationsofVirtue.com booth were extremely helpful.  Their site has loads of books on these subjects - so you might find what you are looking for there!

Beyond All Dreams #REVIEW & Kindle Fire Giveaway / Author Chat Party

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

In Beyond All Dreams by Elizabeth Camden we meet Anna O'Brien - a Library of Congress librarian.  Anna has had tough past and that has made her reserved.  Enter the handsome congressman Luke Callahan who's recent scandal lands him at the library and in need of help.  When these two meet sparks fly and they both need time to see if they are willing to let things blossom.  In the meantime Anna discovers a government coverup and has to decide if she will fight to bring it all to light - can Luke help her?

I loved these characters!  They were both witty and never let anyone get the best of them.  Both had to fight from a young age to get to where they were in their adult lives.  The two together engage in such banter that it had me chuckling along with the characters! I love how this story had a good plot.  Camden write believable characters with very believable stories.  It was also a nice historical glimpse into what congress and the Library of Congress would have looked like in 1897.

What I loved best about this book is that both character's had rough childhoods but they didn't let that be an excuse to make nothing of their lives. They both overcame the odds and went on to have great jobs and be productive members of society.  Abuse didn't define them it empowered them!

You can purchase your copy at your local book retailer or online at stores like Amazon

About the book:

Anna O'Brien leads a predictable and quiet life as a map librarian at the illustrious Library of Congress until she stumbles across the baffling mystery of a ship disappeared at sea. Thwarted in her attempts to uncover information, her determination outweighs her shyness and she turns to a dashing congressman for help.

Luke Callahan was one of the nation's most powerful congressmen before his promising career was shadowed in scandal. Eager to share in a new cause and intrigued by the winsome librarian, he joins forces with Anna to solve the mystery of the lost ship. Opposites in every way, Anna and Luke are unexpectedly drawn to each other despite the strict rules forbidding Anna from any romantic entanglements with members of Congress.

From the gilded halls of the Capitol where powerful men shape the future of the nation, to the scholarly archives of the nation's finest library, Anna and Luke are soon embroiled in secrets much bigger and more perilous than they ever imagined. Is bringing the truth to light worth risking all they've ever dreamed for their futures?

New from Quilts of Love | A Stitch in Crime #Review & Kindle Fire Giveaway!

A Rup Life received product to facilitate this post. This post may contain affiliate links.

I have been loving the Quilts of Love series of books!  A Stitch in Crime by Cathy Elliott is no exception! Each book in the QOL series can be a different genre but they all share the theme of quilts involved.  A Stitch in Crime is of course a mystery!  This one features our young new friend Thea who is co-chair of a Quilt show.  During the course of the week long events tragedy strikes one of the members of the quilt guide and the star of the show quilt.

This was a cute fast read.  Thea was a likable character that was just having a really bad week.  She had great family and friend support who helped to rally and get all the jobs done during the tight time constraints.  While it felt just a tad bit rushed to me (I would have liked to see more romance between Thea and her boyfriend) the overall mystery part was quite enjoyable.  Another great addition to the Quilts of Love series!

You can purchase this book at your local bookstore or online at stores like Amazon

About the book:

Thea's first quilt show is coming apart at the seams!

Thea James has accepted an assignment as co-chairperson for Larkindale's first quilt show extravaganza. Juggling the new assignment with running her antique business, she's already feeling frayed when things start to unravel.
Mary-Alice Wentworth, a much-loved town matriarch, respected quilt judge, and Thea's dear friend, is covertly conked on the head during the kick-off Quilt Show Soiree, throwing suspicion on her guests. It also appears that a valuable diamond brooch has been stolen during the attack. The family is furious. But is it because of their mugged mother or the missing diamonds?
When a renowned textile expert goes MIA and the famous Wentworth heritage quilt disappears, Larkindale's reputation as a tourist haven is at risk. Thea attempts to piece the mystery together and save the town's investment in the quilt show before Mary-Alice is attacked again . . . with far worse results.
