Doodle Adventures Slimy Space Slugs & The *NEW* Pesky Pizza Pirate #review

Getting grade school kids to read can be somewhat of a challenge. I think part of it is the intimidation of the all those words on the pages. I was pretty excited when I saw the pages of Doodle Adventures! These books are interactive. They want kids to draw and personalize the story, making it their own. Written to the reader they read as a bit of a choose your own because you create aspects of the story.

Book in the Series:

Doodle Adventures: The Search for the Slimy Space Slugs! is a lighthearted fantasy where the reader first draws him- or herself into the story, and then continues by following prompts and adding more illustrations and doodles. Set in space, the book invites the reader to join Carl, a duck and member of a super-secret international group of explorers, on a journey in search of a very important grail-like object. The book is sturdy paper over board with beautiful cream paper—perfect for defacing! And by the end, the reader will have co-written a tale to return to again and again, and show off to family and friends.

DOODLE ADVENTURES: The Pursuit of the Pesky Pizza-Pirate, the second book in the series centers on the very important mission of helping Carl the duck find out who has been stealing all of the pizza in town. Armed with a pencil or pen and their imagination - kids fill in the blanks with Carl's prompts until the story is complete. The result is a paper-over-board one-of-a-kind book that's a joy to make, share and read over and over again.

My Thoughts:

As a homeschooling mom I often hear from friends that reading is challenge to get students to complete. Then I come across a series like Doodle Adventures and I think - THIS! See, books like these will get kids reading. They will enjoy the amusing story lines and getting to put their own spin on things. I recognize that it is not the Illiad - but goodness not every books should be! What these books bring is a chance for a child to fall in love with reading. The value of reading and drawing is there too! Then the book can act as a keepsake for future reading and enjoying once the child had completed the drawing through out. I absolutely loved these books and I'm excited about Pesky Pirate being released on September 6. I hope Mike Lowery continues the series. I can see this as a fun assignment in our homeschool or just a great way for kids to get involved with reading.

Doodle Adventures The Search For The Slimy Space Slugs is available now at your local book retailer and online at stores like Amazon. The Pursuit of the Pesky Pizza Pirate! will be on sale on September 6.
