Piano For Kids & Drums For Kids by Hal Leonard Corporation #review

 Many years ago when I first met my husband I shared my dream of playing the piano. I had learned a tiny bit in high school by taking lessons. His family was very musical and his sister plays extremely well. We would often sit and listen to her practice. Fast forward many years to one random Christmas and my husband hands me a rather large gift. In it was a full size keyboard. He wanted me to not just have dreams but to actually accomplish them. So that January with my (then) 3 year old son in tow I took lessons from my husbands former piano teacher. This lasted for awhile and then after about 4 months we purchased our own full sized upright piano which is now the centerpiece of our living room.


I only took lessons for about two years and about when I stopped lessons my oldest son started. He and our second son took lessons for the last 4 years and can play fairly well. Music is an important part of our homeschool and our lives.

I was sent Piano For Kids book for review by Hal Leonard Corporation. While I still consider myself a fairly newish piano student I was really interested in this book and the approach to learning. It really starts you at the beginning with introducting the types of pianos and the parts. You learn how to sit and position your hands. Next your learning journey goes into different notes, beats and rests. One of the things that is different is you learn to play some simple notes (which are in tiny songs) right away before jumping into the actual staff and full sheet music look. This approach is very gentle. About midway you learn about the staff and legato, staccato and all the notes. By the end you are doing fairly advanced songs.

I like how this approach is different than some of the books I've used and have seen from my lessons and the kids. I think this would work very well when we start our kindergarten student because he likes to do hands on work and will like how fast he can jump in. The gradual introductions of concepts allows for time to really let things sink in. I'm excited to share this my son.  Hal Leonard Corporation also has a book for learning drums called Drums For Kids. We did not review that one but for those of you looking for an option for drumming this could be a good resource!
