Holiday Gift Guide: Unit Study with Christmas Around The World

I love this time of year because I love adding holiday studies to our homeschool. I've went a little crazy this year at the dollar store scooping up crafting supplies and hitting up the Target Dollar Spot.  I also pulled a bunch of books from my shelves to read for the month of December. It is my favorite time of year. I love sharing Christmas and my third son is at the perfect age to really absorb all the details. He just turned seven and really enjoys crafting and coloring.

One of the things we are going to be using to study Christmas is Awe Filled Homemaker's Christmas Around The World Unit Study. This is a 70 page study featuring 24 stops to different countries to learn about how they celebrate. There is an adorable passport that goes with the study that includes stickers to glue on for each stop. The study itself includes a story sheet, question sheet and activity. This printable is a very easy way to add holiday fun because you can do it as is or beef it up with additional crafts, geography and books.

We started our holiday studies this week because I don't do them each day this will give us plenty of time to do activities a few days of week.  We haven't done a whole lot with geography this year so I decided to add that with each country stop. I love that there is a coloring sheet for each country. For Austria, I had some foam self-adhesive shapes on hand so I pulled those out and let Jace decorate while I read the story portion. This works well for him because he has a short attention span. I verbally asked him the questions on the study page because he is only in first grade and now quite able to do them alone. (Another month or so he would be able to complete those sheets himself.)

Then I pulled out a book on different countries and read a few facts about Austria. After that we looked on the map portion of the book.

I might pull out our globe as a review after we complete all the countries to do a review of what we learned. This way he can really see the countries all over the world on an actual sphere.

Jace loved his Christmas tree. This was a great activity with the foam shapes because he had to peel the backs off the pieces which really helps with fine motor skills. Can you guess what Jace's favorite color is? He wouldn't even consider using another color.

The first study was on Advent. We typically do a chocolate Advent Calendar for each kid so that is going to be a fun way to re-visit what we learned. Jace actually asked for a lego Advent Calendar and plans on using his birthday money for one in addition to the chocolate ones.

The last part of the study is pulling out your passport and adding your stop. This is a paper passport with paper "stickers" that you glue on the stops. I think this might be my son's favorite part. He loves gluing and getting to see his progress as he learns about each country is pretty neat!
