Book Review: High Cotton by Debby Mayne

I have really been into contemporary Christian novels lately. I went through a historical fiction phase but now it is all about contemporary for me. This is my first book by Debby Mayne and I'm sure it won't be my last. High Cotton is the first book in the Bucklin Family Reunion series.  We meet several members of the Bucklin Family as they all are anticipating another family reunion. Set in a southern landscape the values of Sweet Tea and bringing your best dish prevail as story points - I only wish I had a few recipes from because the food read wonderfully and I have to admit I would have loved to try Missy's chili!

This book features several main characters with cousin, sister and sister-in-law Shay being the main one. At first it was a little jumpy with each character being a different chapter but after those initial introduction chapters I was hooked. I love how Mayne wove the different lives together. She was seamless with their stories. It felt like real life and a real family. I very much enjoyed this story with it's strong family values and Christian values. Faith was also blended well into the story which can sometimes be hard to do but each character's faith felt real and believable.

You won't be disappointed in the book and I bet you will be like me - looking forward to the next one in the series to see what happens next!

A Note from Author Debby Mayne about the Bucklin Family Reunion series:

This series idea was spawned by memories of my own family reunions where family members would come together, eat boatloads of southern food, and brag about all the good things that have happened since the last one. My mother's side of the family would spit and feud, but they would never let anyone outside the family come between them.

 High Cotton Synopsis:
Shay Henke has mixed feelings about going to her family's next reunion. On the one hand, she'll get to see everyone she loves unconditionally. On the other hand, she knows there'll be more drama than Carter has liver pills. As the days leading up to the event bring one surprise after another, Shay deals with her sister-in-law's deep, dark secret, her business-mogul twin cousins whose childlike ways bring out her maternal urges, and running into that guy she never imagined having a chance with but wants to go to the reunion with her. Shay's contentment is challenged, and she's determined to shake things up a bit.
