(un)Natural Mom by Hettie Brittz #review

Do you feel like you just don't measure up as a Mom? That your little Sally and sweet Buddy are unfortunate to have you as a Mom? Everywhere you look these days you can feel the pressure to be the best Mom. From Pinterest to the box-office with movies like Bad Moms... the pressure is everywhere.

(un) Natural Mom: Why You are the Perfect Mom for Your Kids by Hettie Brittz takes you on a journey looking at different mom types and helping you find your strengths, weaknesses and how to make sense of it all. Included with the book is a free online quiz to help you identify which Mom you are.  Brittz uses analogies of different types of trees to describe four different categories you might fit into. She shares her own life struggles and stories to help you relate to mommyhood. Each "type" has an extreme made-up character so you can see how they would be in the real world.

I have a kind of love/hate relationship with this book. At first it feels like the author is writing it to almost apologize for being a lousy mom. She had a tough time jumping into this whole mother role even though it was the thing she wanted most in the world. See I don't like the feelings it stirred up. It was relatable because when I was a new mom I didn't automatically know everything. Now as a more seasoned mom the one thing I know is that I know NOTHING! I have experience but each child is unique and brings something new to the mix which makes it an always growing and learning time.

While my struggles were very different than the author I do acknowledge what she felt. Why else does this upset me? It upsets me because society has changed - years ago your Mother was the one who would teach you to mother. She would come help and make sure you felt secure and did everything for baby. That just doesn't happen today. In this day and age we are expect to do it all and know it all... but here I am on a tangent...

I like this book because it gives you permission to be the mom you naturally tend to sway to. You need to realize who you are and that God made you this way. You are the mom for your kids because they are your kids! It is freeing to give yourself permission to be your own type of Mom.
