In The Spirit Halloween Books for All Ages!

October is flying by and before we know it Halloween will be here. There is something about those crisp fall nights that bring out the spookiness that we all enjoy. I have a great set of books to share with you today that are perfect for getting In The Spirit of the season! Make sure to enter the giveaway at the end of this post after you see all the wonderful books!

About the books

It starts with an uh-oh—the chickens are nervous! Strange things are happening. One chicken saw a pumpkin with flickering eyes, another spied a mouse of enormous size. They all saw a wizard and a witch, and a spooky robot. “WHAT’S GOING ON HERE? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? / Relax, silly chickens! It’s HALLOWEEN!”

We've been huge Sandra Boynton fans since our oldest was born. All of my kids have enjoyed her books and we have quite the collection. When I introducted EEK! Halloween to my eleven month son his 5 year old brother came over, giggling along with the story. As a chicken owner this book was hysterical to me and I've enjoyed reading it. My oldest (who is the chicken keeper) had a good laugh because we often comment on how scared our chickens are of everything - it is why we call people who are afraid chicken! That is the theme of the story, the chickens are afraid until they learn all about Halloween. Seriously this is an adorable book!

Origami meets amazing creatures in a book of paper craft fun! Papertoy Glowbots introduces 46 robots that have the added cool factor of lighting up, whether using glow-in-the-dark stickers that come with the book or light sources like flashlights, Christmas tree lights, and electric tea lights.

This is the bot we made, it was easy as punching and gluing

our bot!

This was a great activity book. If you have kids that like hands-on fun than this is the book for you. There are 46 different bots you can make. All you need to add is some glue. (We used a quick dry craft glue that worked wonderfully!!) The bots are on heavy paper which make them very sturdy and easy to create. There are instructions for each individual and even some glow stickers to go on them. This was really fun!

Combining fact, fiction, and hands-on activities, Frightlopedia is an illustrated A-Z collection of some of the world’s most frightening places, scariest stories, and gruesomest creatures, both real and imagined.

My big kids got a kick out of this book. It is perfect for kids who like a little scare but not so scary that they won't be able to sleep at night. It covers some myths and some creatures/ places that are actually real like the spiders, catacombs and komodo dragon. We were pleased to see the Jersey Devil mentioned in the monsters section because that is a local legend for us.

Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods by Hal Johnson , Ages 8&up
Illustrated by Tom Mead
Illustrated throughout, including eight drawings printed with glow-in-the-dark ink, Fearsome Creatures of the Lumberwoods is for every young reader who loves a good scare. The book was originally published in 1910 by William Thomas Cox and is now inspiringly retold by Hal Johnson, author of Immortal Lycanthropes. The creatures are all scales and claws, razor-sharp teeth and stealth, camouflage and single-minded nastiness. Straight out of the era of Paul Bunyan, they speak to an earlier time in American history, when the woods were indeed dark and deep and filled with mystery. The tone is smart and quirky. The illustrations have a sinewy, retro field-guide look. Read them around a campfire, if you dare.

This has been a fun addition to our nighttime stories. We had only heard of one of these mysterious beasties so learning about the others has been quite a hoot. With 20 tales it is a great way to lead up to Halloween. Of course this one is great for older kids who don't scare easily because the stories are really good. If you have a child that loves a good campfire tale - this is the book for you!

  8. I can't stop laughing about the Halloween when my daughter went as the headless man. Every house we went to wanted her to come in and let everyone see. I ended up buying her a few bags of candy to make up for all the houses she didn't get to because that took up so much time it was too late to continue trick or treating. But she was 9 and loved it too.

  11. My daughter's first Halloween trick or treating! I think she spent more time looking at everyone in the 2 hours we went out and came home with like 10 pieces of candy. Then cried when she didn't have much LOL
